Microneedling and what to expect at Bare and Glow Skin in Ripon
Microneedling at Bare and Glow Skin in Ripon — What to Expect at Your First Appointment
If you’re thinking about booking microneedling, you might be wondering what it feels like, how your skin will look afterwards and whether it’s right for the concern you want to work on. These are all things we’ll talk through together at Bare and Glow Skin in Ripon.
I’m Emma, and I hold a VTCT Level 4 qualification in microneedling and skin peeling. Here’s how I approach your first appointment, from deciding whether your skin is ready for treatment to explaining what I’m doing as we go.

What is microneedling and what can it help with?
Microneedling uses very fine needles to create controlled micro injuries in the skin. This stimulates the skin’s repair response, which includes producing collagen. Over time, microneedling can help improve the appearance of some types of acne scarring, uneven skin texture and fine lines.
If acne scarring is your main concern, I’ll ask what you’re noticing. An indentation left by an old breakout is different from a flat mark or a spot that’s still active. That distinction helps us decide whether microneedling is a suitable next step for your skin.
What happens before your first microneedling treatment?
We’ll start by talking about your skin, what you’d like to improve and what you’re using at home. I’ll ask about any recent treatments, relevant medical history and how your skin has been feeling. If your skin is irritated or you’re experiencing inflamed breakouts, we may decide to give it more time before starting.
This is also your chance to ask me anything, whether you’re nervous about the sensation or trying to plan around work or an event. I’ll explain what you can expect from the appointment and what your skin may need afterwards.
How do I choose the needle depth?
This is one of the parts of treatment where my VTCT Level 4 training comes into practice. I look at the area I’m treating, what we’re aiming to improve and how your skin is responding. That guides the needle depth and how many passes I make over each area. For example, I may use a different depth on your forehead from the one I use on your cheeks.
I’ll tell you what depth I’m using, explain when I change it and check that you’re comfortable throughout. If an area feels more sensitive, let me know and we can pause. You can ask me what I’m doing at any point.
What does microneedling feel like?
People often describe it as a prickly or scratchy sensation, and it can feel different from one part of the face to another. If you’re nervous, tell me at the start. I can talk you through what to expect before we begin and check in as we move between areas.

What will my skin look like afterwards?
Your skin may feel warm, tight or sensitive after treatment. You may also notice some redness or a temporary change in colour, depending on your skin tone. How visible this is and how quickly it settles varies from person to person. If you have a wedding, photoshoot or other event coming up, mention it before booking so we can discuss timing.
At Bare and Glow Skin, LED is included as standard with microneedling. Before you leave, I’ll talk you through your aftercare, including how to keep your routine gentle, when to restart products such as retinoids or exfoliating acids, and how to protect your skin from the sun.
How many microneedling sessions will I need?
That depends on what you’d like to improve and how your skin responds. Changes develop gradually, and a course may be appropriate if we’re working on a concern such as acne scarring. At your first appointment, we can discuss what’s realistic for your skin and whether a course makes sense for you.
